I enjoyed your take on it. I remember as a student getting sort of jacked up during my first codes and now, a few years later, I find myself settling into that calm you described and just going through the list of what needs to be done. One of my biggest fears in RT school was that I'd freak out and not remember anything but like your teachers said, it's just about relaxing and going through all the things that need to be done. Just last night I had a patient trying to crash and I walked by the nurse's station on the way to get a Bipap and told her what I was going to do. When I got back, she and the PCA were teasing me about "Geez, you're always so calm! We're freaking out and you're just taking care of the problem!" It was the best compliment ever!

There's a book called The House of God that talks about "In the event of a code, take your own pulse first."

You did great! Boy, don't you hate that WTF(?) moment when you opened the bag and the mask wasn't there?! Yikes!

Glad to hear you had an exciting day. Kind of ironic to get excited at someone elses expense, but that's life in the medical field. We have RT students here at Shoreline, and we really enjoy working with them. I suppose it's a chance for us to share our knowledge and experiences.

They should hire RT consultants to keep the movies and TV shows in line and accurate!! Cartoons are the same way...and another thing, Respiratory Therapist doing cartoons. What's that all about. They should stick to what they do best NOT cartooning. I felt so strongly about that, I quit RT! I mean "so long" and "goodbye" and I took up cartooning. I learned from the masters...I wanted to show that RTs can excel at cartooning!! I made it. Whew...after all that work I became a syndicated cartoonist. (Really, I did) Now I want to get back into RT and all people say is...what!! you're that cartoonist/RT. We don't hire cartoonists. Cartoonists shouldn't try to be RTs. Stick to what you do best. Go back to your drawing board. So I did...since you can't take the RT out of the cartoonist I created a book of RT (threw in other hospital type) cartoons. You be the judge if they are any good. I don't think the book will be on some RT professor's reading list...yet. If the book isn't worth a hoot I'll have to hire a RT consultant.

dude, we have to repeat some aspect of every checkoff it seems. The last time it was because I forgot to tell the teacher to hold her breath after an IS treatment. The thing that is getting me is the tests. I'm studying my butt off and then the tests have it worded in a way I'm unsure about. Oh yeah, you inspired me to do a blog dedicated to school

If a doctor treated me like that I would just stand there and let him rant, then as soon as he was gone I'd write him up.

LOL! Even after you are official you still won't like being yelled at. Hopefully you'll work at a hospital where it's rare. I got yelled at once as a student on a clinical rotation. Both my RT instructor and the nurse jumped the doc's butt about it. The RT said, "If you're going to yell, yell at ME." The nurse said "She's not even an employee of this hospital!"

At my hospital we do have a few docs we handle with kid gloves because they can bristle, BUT, my hospital has a policy in place with a review board that allows the rest of us to take it to someone higher up if we get treated unreasonably by a doctor. I think that's a great policy. In general, even if our physicians are short with us they're not too bad.

You can actually run a NRB through a bubbler, it's just that the bubbler will run out in about a half hour. It's not that big of a deal, however embarrassing it might be.
